Who is our service for?
Our service is the main service in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service). It is for children and young people who have complex mental health problems. We also aim to support the families of children and young people who have mental health needs.
How do we help?
When someone is referred to us, we will meet with them to find out what their mental health needs are. If we feel someone can benefit more from another service, we can help them get in touch with that service. If we feel we can help someone, we will discuss different kinds of treatment and support with the young person and their family.
We can help someone using different kinds of therapies, and we can help someone using medication. Therapies include talking-based therapy, creative therapy, and family therapy. We are very aware that children and young people are still developing, and so we encourage positive childhood development as part of our support.
We have several different kinds of staff in our team. We have psychologists, psychiatrists, community psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, family therapists, social workers, and primary mental health workers. Having this range of staff means we are more able to care for someone’s individual needs.
We also give information about mental health and our service to the people who can refer to us. This should help people when they are making decisions about whether or not to refer to us. Within the team there is also a specialist community mental health nurse. This nurse works as a primary health care worker, giving mental health training and support to schools, health centres, and any other children’s teams and agencies across Sandwell.
We also have staff working in two services run by Sandwell Council, making sure that the mental health needs of children and young people using the services are well cared for. The Looked After Children service support children and young people who cannot stay, for whatever reason, in their family home. The Multi-Agency Team Around the Child service provide support to children and young people who have exceptional needs in many areas of their life.
Who can refer into our service?
We accept referrals from many different professionals, including GPs, school health nurses, health visitors, and staff members from our partner agencies in Education and the Local Authority.
What happens in an emergency?
During working hours, if a mental health emergency involves someone using the service, Specialist CAMHS should be contacted. Outside of working hours, Sandwell Council run an Emergency Duty Service, whose contact details are 0121 569 3100. This service is for people aged up to 16 and aged 16-18 if in full-time education. Those aged 16-18 who are not in full time education should get in touch with the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team.
What about carers and families?
We can offer support and practical advice to the families and carers of young people using our service.
