The family and relatives of Ron Smith, a former patient of the Therapy and Recovery Unit (TARU) at Edward Street Hospital, have generously donated £1,000 enabling the creation of a reminiscence room for the benefit of dementia patients attending the unit.
Research has shown that individuals living with dementia can become agitated by change so having a room furnished in a familiar way that triggers memories can have a positive calming effect on an individual’s health and wellbeing.
The reminiscence room has been decorated in a typical 1950s style with colourful bold retro wall paper, a small sideboard and coal effect fire. There are also many stylish soft furnishings and accessories from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s adorning the room. The finishing touch being a wind-up gramophone complete with old-fashioned 78 r.p.m. records, all donated by the Smith family and friends.
The room was officially unveiled by Hilary Smith, Ron’s wife, on Wednesday 27th January 2016. Sadly, Ron who was to have been guest of honour was unwell on the day and unable to celebrate with his family members by cutting the ribbon to open the room.
Hilary commented, “Ron really enjoyed coming to this unit, and we wanted to do show our appreciation to the staff who looked after, and cared for him. Today’s celebration is a lovely experience for us because we have collected for charities before, but seeing what the money you’ve raised has made possible is very special and makes it all worthwhile.
It’s sad that Ron is unwell today and couldn’t make the unveiling of the room. He would love this room and we know that other patents will too.”
David Hipgrave, Staff Nurse said, “The staff on the unit are really excited about this project and would like to express their sincere thanks to the Smith family for funding this wonderful addition to the unit.
Our patients will benefit enormously from this generous donation and we thank the Smith family for all their hard work in raising such a huge amount of money. This room is a wonderfully calm and relaxing space and will be a valuable resource to our client group because upon entering the room you’re immediately swept back to days gone-by and a different era.”
