Volunteers win award

When the staff awards took place this year there were two extra awards dedicated to our volunteers:

The Outstanding Achievement for Contribution to Voluntary Services at Edward Street Hospital was awarded to Liz Gratwick.

Liz has worked at Edward Street for more than 20 years, originally with the WRVS! Freddy's Opened its doors in November 2005 and the café is now the central focus of the hospital attracting not just staff but relatives, carers and the patients themselves.  Liz is supported by 16 volunteers, who each take turns to keep the café open 5 days a week to serve food, drinks and toiletries.  It is she who keeps the Friends enthusiastic and working, and has been instrumental in making Freddy's such a success.  The volunteers are also members of 'Friends of Edward Street and Community’ and raise up to £15,000 per year through sales in the café as well as donations which help to purchase items for the wards, not just at Edward Street, but also Hallam Street.

A Highly Commended for Contribution to Voluntary Services at Edward Street Hospital was awarded to The Gardening Volunteer Group

The group meet every Wednesday morning with Horticultural Therapist Suzanne Whitehouse.  The group began in February 2005, and over the years have seen a number of ex service users helping to maintain the garden and greenhouse at Edward Street.

The group now consists of three ex service users Ron Hawthorne, Graham Bellingham and Graham Bradrick, and Alan Harris.  Unfortunately Alan was unable to attend the event, but the others were there to collect the award.
