Infection Prevention and Control

Infection prevention and control does not just rest with the Infection Prevention and Control Team – tackling infection now forms part of all job descriptions and appraisals, all staff have their part to play in helping us reduce infection rates.

The Infection Prevention and Control Committee meets four times a year to address both national and local priorities for infection prevention and control and oversees the annual infection control programme for the Trust. The progress of the infection control programme is reported quarterly to the committee and exceptions reported to the Trust Board by the Director of Infection Prevention and Control as / when required.

The team provides expert knowledge and guidance to individuals and the Trust on all matters relating to the prevention and control of infection. The key components of the service are:

  • Advice about prevention and management of infection
  • Outbreak prevention and management
  • Advice and information for patients and carers
  • Education about infections and how to prevent and control them for all clinical staff
  • Advice about building and refurbishment projects within the Trust
  • Monitoring environmental cleanliness & infection prevention and control standards
  • Provision and updating of policies, guidelines and protocols to ensure care is evidence based
  • Advice on decontamination of equipment
  • Conducting a programme of audit (environment and practice) and surveillance
