Counselling Service

Who is our service for?

We have three Counselling Services covering Oldbury and Smethwick, Wednesbury and West Bromwich, and Rowley Regis and Tipton. Each service gives support to people aged 16 and over with a variety of emotional difficulties. We offer specialist services for South Asian and African-Caribbean clients who wish to talk with a worker who has specialist cultural and language skills. We have workers who can provide counselling in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, and Bengali.

How do we help?

We can help people with a range of issues. These include:

  • Self-image and identity issues
  • Bereavement
  • Trauma (though not post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Coping with injury or illness
  • Life crises
  • Loss of employment, health, a relationship, and so on
  • Mild to moderate depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and anger problems
  • Family issues and sexual relationship issues

Counselling gives someone a safe space to discuss and explore their concerns and feelings. This can help someone begin to understand their difficulties better and work towards resolving some of them. We listen carefully to people without judging them. We will not tell someone what to do, but help them to think about any changes they want to make in their lives.  It is then up to the person to choose what to do.

Sessions are 45 minutes to 1 hour long and usually take place at the same time each week, for an average of 6 weeks. Sessions are confidential and take place in a GP setting or in other community venues. As the sessions progress we can build up a relationship with the person, which allows them to deal with difficult, and perhaps uncomfortable, feelings. We may ask someone to carry out simple tasks in between sessions, such as keeping a diary. This encourages people to be active in sorting out their issues, and to learn how to manage things on their own.

Who can refer to our service?

We accept referrals from Primary Care teams. We also accept self-referrals via the Hub by telephoning 0303 033 9903 from people aged 16 and over who are registered with a GP in Sandwell. This does not include Smethwick Medical Centre who have their own counsellors attached to their practices.
