Speech and Language Therapy Service

Who is our service for?

Adult Learning Disability Service

  •  For people living in Sandwell aged 18 or over with either communication or eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties. We see people with learning disabilities who are receiving community or inpatient support.

Older Adults Service

How do we help?

Adult Learning Disability Service:

  • Find out about a person’s communication skills and difficulties
  • Find out about a person’s eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties
  • Give support, advice, treatment, and information about communication or swallowing difficulties
  • Change food and drink consistencies to help people swallow safely
  • Introduce and support the use of communication aids that help people communicate better. For example, high-tech communication aids, symbol books, objects of reference, and menu choice boards
  • Work with carers and clients to make their own communication skills better and help people develop their own resources
  • Work together with Nurses, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Dieticians to provide effective care

Older Adults Service:

  • Find out about a person’s eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties
  • Give support, advice, treatment, and information about swallowing difficulties
  • Change food and drink consistencies to help people swallow safely
  • Give basic advice about making communication better and help people develop their own resources
  • Work together with Nurses, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, and Dieticians to provide effective care

Who can refer into our service?

Adult Learning Disability Service:

  • We take referrals from health and social care professionals
  • We also take referrals from the person themselves, the person’s family, or a paid carer supporting the person

Older Adults Service:

  • We take referrals from health and social care professionals

What about families and carers?

Adult Learning Disability Service:

  • We can give carers support, advice, and information about communication or swallowing difficulties
  • We can work with carers to make their own communication skills better

Older Adults Service:

  • We can give carers support, advice, and information about swallowing difficulties
  • We can give basic advice about communication
