Sandwell CAMHS CAIT (Crisis Assessment and Intervention Team)

Who is our service for?

The Sandwell CAMHS CAIT (Crisis Assessment and Intervention Team) functions with an overall aim to provide a timely service, ablet to respond both quickly and intensively to children, young people nad their families and/or carers.

This means that we offer specialist services to those children and young people whose needs (usually due to risk and / or severity of mental illness) cannot be met by lower tier CAMHS services. We operate 7 days a week, 8am -8pm, 365 days a year. The overall aim of the team is to reduce the frequency of admissions into a Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit, keeping children and young people at home with their families, where they are able to receive a specialist intensive CAMHS support.

How do we help?

The CAIT Team responds to referrals received from Sandwell General Hospital and Birmingham City hospital offering CAMHS assessments to those children and young people who have been admitted following an act of self harm, or who are presenting with significant mental health concerns on a daily basis between the hours of 8am-8pm.

Interventions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the child/young person and their family/carers. In order to provide safe, effective and integrated care, the team utilises a multi-agency approach, ensuring that information and responsibility are appropriately and effectively shared throughout the professional network.

Targeted treatment includes short term interventions (for example solution focused, CBT, and brief systemic interventions) for up to 6-8 weeks or until the crisis period has subsided and is safe to transition to other services if required.

Who can refer into our service?

CAIT can be accessed through A&E, Acute Paediatric Services and CAMHS only.
