Trust helping the West Midlands to ‘Join Dementia Research’

jdrBlack Country Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is encouraging people to join a national dementia research service by hosting a registration kiosk at Edward Street Hospital in West Bromwich.

Join Dementia Research is a nationwide online and telephone service that makes it easier for people to register their interest in taking part in vital dementia research. People can now register for it online via a special kiosk located in the canteen of Edward Street Hospital.

Dementia affects 850,000 people in the UK and the only way to beat the condition is through research. Join Dementia Research matches volunteers to studies taking place around the country and they can then be invited to take part in a variety of ways, such as taking surveys and questionnaires, as well as helping to test new treatments.

The service is open to anyone over the age of 18. People can also act as a representative to register a loved one, including someone who has dementia who may find it difficult to register themselves.

Esther Hutchinson, Researching and Innovation Manager (Acting) said: “We are really pleased to be taking part and hosting the Join Dementia Research Kiosk to highlight the importance of dementia research and provide the ability for our patients to understand more about it and the different ways they can get involved. The kiosk at Edward Street Hospital is a conversation-starter for those waiting for appointments, or enjoying a cup of tea during lunch time, often leading to someone sharing a story about a friend or relative who is living with dementia.

“We are encouraging members of the public, carers and staff to access the kiosk and sign up to be a part of the research taking place. The kiosk itself is easy to use and presents a short video about the ‘Join Dementia Research’ initiative before providing easy to follow instructions to register your interest and sign up to help beat dementia.”

Join Dementia Research is funded by the Department of Health and delivered in partnership with the NIHR, Alzheimer Scotland, Alzheimer's Research UK and Alzheimer's Society.
